ATU Systems vs. Septic Systems
Everyone eats, and everyone produces waste. There is no question that what goes in must come out. When traditional sewage isn’t available, using a septic tank is the next best option. However, there is an alternative option that is not talked about as often, and that is an ATU. Which is better for you? The pros and cons of each will be displayed below, to help you decide what will best your needs.

ATU Systems

Many of you may be reading this and think, “What are ATU Systems?” ATU stands for “Aerobic Treatment Unit.” ATU systems are an alternative solution to a septic system. An aerobic treatment unit prepares wastewater by adding additional oxygen to it. The purpose of this is to break down matter, reduce bacteria and transform nutrients into your system. ATU systems are meant to be more energy efficient. They are also made to reduce solid waste and other bacteria quicker than a septic tank. In short, choosing an aerobic treatment system is cleaner, faster, and more energy efficient. However, ATU systems are expensive and difficult to install than traditional septic systems.

Septic Systems

With a traditional septic system, there are also many advantages and disadvantages.  Septic systems are less expensive and easier to install. Frequent maintenance is not required. However, they are not as good for the environment as ATU Systems. They take up space and can deteriorate over time.

Which is the right option for you? The location of your property also has a bearing on which treatment system you should choose based on land available, soil conditions and how close you are to the water table.
